This is a bit of an “insider post” since I’ve known Steve Kenny since our college days at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, but I was reading my New York Times online edition just now and saw that Kenny has a “story behind the story” item about how the Times has been covering the South Carolina church shooting story.
Although most readers don’t stop to think (nor do they need to) about how reporters gather the information, this piece is short and talks about how the Times researched its original story about the shootings and the shooter.
Kenny has worked in a couple of capacities at the Times for the past eight years, most recently as a senior editor on the New York news desk. Prior to that, he spent quite a few years with the Dallas Morning News in a variety of editing and writing jobs with in-between stops at a few other metropolitan dailies.
Kenny grew up in Preston Hollow, near Hillcrest High School, and he still constantly talks about the impression the late Julia Jeffress, Hillcrest’s longtime student newspaper advisor, had on his journalism career.
